Ricardo Azziz famously said Augusta isn’t “cool.”
It turns out that’s not necessarily a bad thing – especially for Columbia County.
Boring, see, is also stable. And decidedly un-whacko.
Want to see the opposite? Millions apparently do, flocking to cable TV to gawk at such reality show nonsense as Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo, a spinoff of the atrocious Toddlers in Tiaras, providing a warped view of rural life, child exploitation and spoiled brat behavior.
At the other end of the spectrum are the Real Housewives of (pick the city), showcasing snotty, overprivileged urban prima donnas.
In between are the various New Jersey stereotypes and fake competitions for relationships.
And thank goodness: Though we’re fortunate to have a couple of recent dancing and dating competitors hail from Columbia County, all of the shows are filmed far away.
Not that we’d mind the Hollywood treatment, mind you; there’s a lot of good that can come from getting positive attention for a community. But we certainly don’t envy tiny McIntyre, Ga., the epicenter for the undue attention on Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson. Hollywood loves to portray rural communities as backwoods and backward, and McIntyre residents are cringing even as the noisy second-grader snags her 15 minutes of fame.
No, thanks. Without that sort of attention, we’ll continue to thrive here in boring Columbia County.
