All of these students at Lakeside Middle School should have been expelled for the remainder of the school year.

For three of the students, an exception was made because they had no prior disciplinary problems. There is a first time for everything. Many thieves, rapists and murderers have no previous felonies.

As a school system and county, we, as citizens, must take action against those who may do it again, at the detriment of others.

Amidst all the controversy surrounding the Zell Miller Scholarship for high-achieving students, I have not heard a single critic posing my most pressing question: Why is the score on the writing portion of the SAT excluded as a qualifying criterion?

I appreciate Eleanor Paschal’s Feb. 12 guest column. She expresses insight and understanding of the fate of Hispanic immigrants who come into the hard-working agricultural world in this country. She also is correct in saying our “politicians are competing to see who can formulate the harshest immigration reform.”

For practical reasons, any American farm or dairy could not survive without illegal workers, because American workers have become entitled to a more affluent life guaranteed by Uncle Sam.

... The rising up of a mob of angry residents around the Martinez development of Magnolia Trace discloses an arrogant temperament toward those who cannot afford the same privileges as the elites, but lack the financial depth required to ensure equality in housing, medical care, etc.

As the editor has pointed out, Magnolia Trace is destined to be a large-scale warehousing of the poor. This attitude is reminiscent of the “poor house” mentality of the 19th and 20th centuries.
