Letter to the editor

To the friendly people of Columbia County:

This letter is in response to the extremely high level of courtesy, help and understanding shown to my wife, Lena, and me, Jim Hamilton.

On late morning and through the day on Wednesday, Oct. 11, we experienced a total mechanical breakdown in the worst possible location, the middle of the roundabout at Appling Harlem and Wrightsboro roads.

The truckers eased by us with inches to spare. They all smiled and gave us a knowing wave. Motorists eased by, following the truckers, and only one person showed any contempt for our situation.
The "cavalry" arrived shortly and Columbia County sheriff's Deputy Bobby Atli took charge and along with three other officers, pushed our 31-foot motorhome out of the roundabout. Our road service company tried for an hour to have a local wrecker respond to our need for transport to a repair facility, with no success.

Then James Richards of J&R Towing, his father, Summie, and brother-in-law arrived. James assured me that he could and would repair my rig where it sat. He informed me they would remain there on the job until all was fixed - and did they! They worked from about 11 a.m. until almost 7 p.m. They dropped an 80-gallon fuel tank, half filled, and replaced a defective fuel pump.
I want to thank them for all of their efforts and for showing the true spirit of kindness, understandning and resourcefullnees of the community. Officer Bobby Alti returned to check on us numerous times.

Again, this community will always be held by me in high esteem. This is the way the rest of this country should strive to be.

Very respectfully,

Jim & Lena Hamilton

Lake City, Fla.
