Son's short life highlighted community's compassion  02/22/12 - 2:39am

On Oct. 8, 2005, I married the most precious girl in the world: my wife, Blair Schiffbauer. Facebook itself had just become a part of our lives. For the next seven years we built our foundation to be loving parents. On May 20, 2011, I heard my wife scream joyously “I‘m pregnant!” as she held a positive pregnancy test. Later, we learned that we were having a baby boy. We immediately named him Anderson Thomas Schiffbauer.

Party 'wingers' fly around in circles  02/19/12 - 12:00am

Fundamentally, Republicans are conservative and Democrats are liberal. Democrats are on the left and Republicans are on the right. Sometimes they are called left-wing and right-wing.

In his farcical campaign for president in 1968, Pat Paulsen addressed the issue of right-wingers and left-wingers when he wrote: “I am neither right wing nor left wing, I am more or less middle-of-the-bird. I feel that if a political party leans too heavily toward the right wing or the left wing, it tends to fly around in circles.”

Lawmakers won't impose limits on lobbyists  02/15/12 - 4:50am

Tommy Smith has been part of the Georgia Legislature for a long time.

The silver-haired blueberry farmer from Bacon County was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 1978, when a guy named Jimmy Carter was president. Smith was a lifelong Democrat until a few years ago, when he switched to the Republican Party and was able to hang on to a committee chairmanship.

Josh McKoon is a young attorney from Columbus who is in the middle of his first term as a state senator.

Americans should work to understand immigrants  02/12/12 - 4:29am

As a senior Spanish education major at Valdosta State University, I had the opportunity this past semester to work with adult English language learners at the Plaza Comunitaria in Statenville, Ga. I became acquainted with many Mexican immigrants who live and work in south Georgia.

One student at the plaza has lived in the United States for 11 years and is the father to three beautiful girls, all of whom were born in the United States and have dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico.

Church series will deal with difficult topics  02/08/12 - 12:00am

Can anyone doubt that we live in an age of diversity? The barrage of campaign trail blather is enough to remind us that when it comes to the more controversial topics, lines get drawn in the sand with a pretty heavy hand. All one has to do is read the daily headlines to see that we are a people who hold a variety of opinions on almost every topic.

Georgia voters of the Republican persuasion will be choosing their favorites in the presidential preference primary coming up on March 6, and it looks like those could be very important ballots.

As one of several primaries set for “Super Tuesday,” Georgia could actually have a big impact on which candidate gets the Republican nomination.

Tax cuts aren't a magic solution for state's economic downturn  01/29/12 - 12:00am

Back in March 2005, I sat in the press gallery of the Georgia Senate reporting on the debate over a bill to give tax breaks to major corporations that amounted to nearly $1 billion over a 10-year period.

I listened as a state senator from Gainesville named Casey Cagle assured his colleagues that this tax break measure was going to be the greatest thing for Georgia since the invention of the cotton gin.

Obama's 'Blueprint for America' is built on a cracked foundation  01/25/12 - 4:22am

In years past, I’ve chosen to forego attending President Obama’s annual State of the Union speech, and instead focused on interacting with my constituents through live, virtual town halls while I watched the speech in my office. This wasn’t out of disrespect, but because I wanted to see real-time responses from Georgians and to get their ideas for what might jumpstart our economy.

Plenty of things to think about as surgery looms  01/22/12 - 4:59am

For the past couple of weeks, I have been thinking about funny memories of my family and friends. Maybe these thoughts are coming back to me because I need to have back surgery (again), and this procedure kind of has me worried. It doesn’t help that I have a very active imagination.

One memory was when my son Tommy was little and determined to teach me how to ride a bike. That’s right; I have never ridden a bike in my life. Tommy put me on one in our driveway and told me there was nothing to it; just steer it like a car.

It was a strange first week for the Georgia Legislature  01/18/12 - 3:57am

In a normal year, the first week of the General Assembly session is a time when very little is happening.

Legislators wander into the capitol to start their daily session at a few minutes after 10 a.m., hold a roll call, listen to the reading of some resolutions commending their constituents, and applaud a group of high school students sitting in the visitors’ gallery.

It is a routine that normally can be knocked off in 50 minutes or so before the Senate and the House of Representatives adjourn for the day.
