Your Aug. 3 piece on changing the Martinez-Augusta shared 30907 ZIP code is a great idea and is much needed to eliminate much confusion. Thanks to Joe Soparas for bringing up the concept. Consider these statistics from Wikipedia: Martinez, a Census Designated Place (CDP), is 14 square miles with a population of 35,000 citizens. The section of Augusta’s 30907 area appears to be about 10 percent of that size and population. Evans, also a CDP, is 26 square miles with a population of 29,000 citizens. Most Web sites identify the 30907 ZIP code as Augusta, not Martinez. The U.S. Postal Service identifies the zip as Augusta but calls Columbia County the “Primary County.” With numerous Columbia County commercial businesses in 30907, the danger of misdirecting sales tax dollars is enough to warrant a change. I have had several exasperating moments because of the confusion (eg. when getting a passport). The easiest thing would be to simply remove the Augusta section from 30907 and incorporate it into the adjacent 30909 ZIP code. Let the county lines be the boundary line.
