Veterans are tolerated, not treasured in America

Dear editor,

On Tuesday, July 15, 2014, New York Yankees star Derek Jeter played his final All-Star game. He went 2-for-2 with a run scored and left in the top of the fourth to a three minute ovation from the Target Field crowd. He received more love, admiration, and respect than a Medal of Honor recipient. That’s how it is in America. Athletes, actors, and music artist are treasured more than veterans. A Bible quote says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

America’s heart is not with veterans. Veterans are grudgingly tolerated, not treasured. It’s sad that America values a celebrity who amuses and entertains more than a veteran who protects their freedom and way of life.

Congratulations, Derek Jeter. You are treasured.
