This letter is in support of the re-election of Ron Cross for Columbia County Commission chairman. His opponent says he is spending money recklessly. I say it is quite the contrary. Mr. Cross, the Commission and the staff they have hired, have made investments in the county to make our quality of life the best in the State. Why else would it rank so high in economic ratings? People and business want to be here!
As chairman of the Columbia County Civil Service Commission I saw first hand the evenhandedness that was rendered by Mr. Cross. First of all, there have only been a few cases to come before the commission in the eight years I have served on the volunteer body (five years as chair). With 1,000 people on the county payroll, this to me is a good sign. We were able to make changes to Human Resources policy in the spirit of better government without interference from above. This, coupled with great espirit of the employees, is another reason I chose to live in Columbia County.
Although the position of chairman is supposed to be very part time, Mr. Cross spends many, many hours on the job. I don’t think many others aspiring to this position could claim that.
