Columbia County has been recognized nationally as a great place to live and raise a family. So, why don’t our residents vote? Do they not see the need to exercise the privilege to vote that our fallen heroes died for?
For the primary election in 2010 there were over 82,000 registered voters in Columbia County and only 12,956 took the time to fulfill the obligation to vote in the election for Columbia County commission chairman. That is only 15.6 percent of the registered voters.
We should all be ashamed of the turnout. I know that I am. The day after so many did not vote in 2010, 24-year-old 1st Lt. Michael L. Runya of Newark, Ohio was killed in Iraq defending our privilege to vote. Will you stay home and not vote in 2014 and cast shame on his service and sacrifice to our country?
This letter does not seek to influence who you choose to vote for, but I ask you to become an informed voter.
If you are informed, then the choice will be clear as to whom you should vote for. We owe this to Michael and our other fallen heroes, as well as those who put on the uniform voluntarily each and every day.
