Letter: Science does not support evolution

Posted: January 19, 2014 - 12:03am

Dear Editor:

In Steve Crawford’s article, “GOP beliefs seem to be evolving,” January 15, 2014, he makes an assumption, which is not correct. He states, “I know many reject the idea that humans and other creatures have evolved and changed over time, based on their religious beliefs.”

At one time, it was true that our rejection of evolution was based upon our religious faith alone; but today we have scientific facts that support creation, the Biblical record, and not evolution. We now know the evidence used in the 40s and 50s was false! The tooth of a pig, the mixed fossils of Java man, the fragments of a skull of the Piltdown man, the Neanderthals, Lucy, and Ardi; all failed to prove any transition to human beings. In fact, much of that evidence was falsified to deceive the public into believing evolution!

There is no fossil record showing the transition of one species into another species. Today we know that DNA supports creation; that all offspring receive their DNA from their parents, 50 percent from each. If there is no DNA for feathers in the parents, then there will be no DNA for feathers in the offspring! This makes evolution impossible!

Mutations within the species may change; but that will not change the “Kind” of that species. For example, dogs with short or long hair remain dogs. On the DVD Evolution vs. God, college students and college professors are asked if they could name one scientific fact that proved evolution and they could not give an answer!

Richard Dawkins was asked in a debate if he could name one single case where a new species was formed by mutation and he could not! This is in keeping with Charles Darwin’s writing where he asks the question: “Why is not every geological formation and every stratum full of such intermediate links?” The answer is that there are none!

Evolution is prevalent today, not because evidence supports it; but because in our educational systems no other information or evidence is allowed. Therefore, we have years of indoctrinated students exposed to this controlled teaching that evolution is a proven scientific fact and that the Bible is a book of myths.

What is additionally sad is our ministers have gone through this same indoctrination, and no longer believe and preach the complete Bible. This has weakened our society through the years and now we have no accountability to God and no restrictions on how we live.

At one time, America’s pulpits were our source of education in the Word of God and they were an influence for righteousness in our society.

Today, the Church has lost its power and respect! The basic truths about sin, hell, and judgment are not presented; but in not doing so, makes us feel better and makes the church more acceptable. The Church needs to wake up or it will sleep through the rapture!

The truth will set you free. Satan does not accept the truth. We

have a generation , who as the Bible states, "will not abide sound doctrine... but will seek out prophets who tickle there ears with fairy tales, jokes and sorted entertainment". Organized religion has become such a monstrous money making machine that it has lost its first love, Jesus Christ. For this apostate church, Jesus is only a tool for money, power and political influence peddling. Just like the rest of the world.

Faith Vs Reason, 155 years into the debate.

Come now, Mr. Ward. Religion, wonderfully adapted for comforting our souls, is incapable of providing rational explanations for how we all came to be here. And science is not an evil entity bent on ensnaring and damning our souls.

Science is only a set of tools, a process, a means of asking intelligent questions and deriving plausible answers. An educated guess in science is called a hypothesis; only after a lengthy period of rigorous attempts to disprove it, and have it hold up under scrutiny, is it ever accepted as a theory. It can then stand as generally accepted fact until such time as a better technique or plausible evidence to the contrary knocks it from its perch.

In science, there is no dogma. Many scientists were understandably upset when the Newtonian model of the universe was supplanted by Einstein's still radical theories, but they got over it and created a new narrative for the way the universe functions.

Human egos often enter the process, and sometimes deceptions are deliberately made. The infamous Piltdown Man hoax fooled people who really should have known better, (and would likely not fool today's first-year med students) but make no mistake... that was just noise, it did nothing to disprove an emerging evolutionary family tree leading to H. Sapiens.

"Intermediate Links"? Once called "Transitional Forms," they're everywhere in nature, and it doesn't take a trained scientist to see them. The fossil record abounds with remains of creatures who show traits belonging to both predecessor and descendant species. Walk through a large museum of natural history, and if you can trust what your eyes are showing you, this will become obvious.

That the fossil record is incomplete is an understatement. In order to be fossilized, a creature had to die a particularly horrible death, typically drowning, immediately followed by entombment in mud or peat, then lie undisturbed for an unimaginably long time. The vast majority of things that crawled, walked, swam, or flew ended up devoured by carrion eaters or insects, or decayed into the soil... and left no trace that they ever existed. Still, the few thousand reconstructed skeletons scattered in museums around the world display a compelling argument for the evolutionary process as it is understood today.

Evolution, in the year 2014, is a generally accepted scientific fact. It works. It answers all of the questions that science can throw at it. If, one day, the remains of something are unearthed that plainly contradict the Theory of Evolution... then scientists will ask an entirely new set of questions, and come up with a new interpretation that better answers those questions.

In short, science gives us the means to ask the questions, it doesn't care at all whether or not we'll like... nor even accept... the answers.

science does not support evolution

How did this country produce so many pious know-nothings who think they can refute science by citing ancient hoaxes and blunders long since discredited by scientists, then throwing Bible verses at us? You know, don't you, Gil, that the only realm of the world that isn't laughing at us for our lamentable scientific ignorance is the Muslim realm?
