I’ve lived in Columbia County all my life. I’ve also played sports all my life.
I’ve been all over and seen leagues of all types and competitive levels. Never have I seen a league with such apathy for any program as I have for adult athletics in Columbia County.
The fields at the entire complex of Patriots Park are awful. There are hills and valleys in the middle of baseball fields. The scoreboards rarely, if ever, work. And don’t ask for clarification of any rule, because there is the book rule, a county supplemental rule and whatever they decide to enforce at the moment.
It costs upwards of $600 to place a team in a league, and what do you get for your hard-earned money? Poor fields, poor facilities and random rules. Is it any wonder so many of us who call Martinez and Evans home would rather ride all the way to Diamond Lakes?
Go spend a day with their director, Lyda Gregg. If anyone at Columbia County worked half as hard as she does, Columbia County leagues would improve tenfold.
Just now I saw a news story of a BMX park possibly coming to Columbia County. Great; just another thing that the county can rip money off of and not sink a dime into ever improving, Maybe they can rename the fields after Lady Antebellum. Maybe then someone would care.
