Easter basket donations needed

Columbia County Cares food pantry is again collecting Easter Baskets this year to be distributed to children 12 and under in our client families. Baskets can be either store bought or handmade. If the basket contains toys, please mark them Boy, Girl, or Either; Baskets most certainly may contain religious material. Please drop baskets off at Columbia County Cares, 1959 Appling-Harlem Hwy., Appling, Ga., or call (706) 541-2834 and we will pick the baskets up. In 2016, we distributed 150 baskets, thanks to the generosity of Columbia County.

Japanese weaving

Harlem Arts Council presents Kumihimo with Ulriche Beck from 10 - 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18 and April 1 at 175 N. Louisville St. in Harlem. Learn an ancient Japanese weave to make a bracelet. Kumihimo was prominently used by Samurai, but are now used as ties on a traditional obi (kimono sash). Minimum 2 students. Cost: $17 includes two 90-minute classes (first class learn techniques, second class develop the bracelet) and all materials. Contact Ulrike at (706) 556-1984.

Spring birdhouse-making

Harlem Arts Council presents painting a spring birdhouse with Brenda Stephens from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, March 18 at 175 N. Louisville St. in Harlem. Acrylic paint free-hand and/or with stencils. Civil War roundtable

The monthly meeting of the Civil War Roundtable of Augusta will be at 6 p.m., March 20 at Goodwill's Snelling Center, 3165 Washington Road, Augusta. Enjoy an evening with Ed Bearss, National Park Service Chief Historian Emeritus and a "rock star among battlefield guides." Ed has been nominated for a Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his contributions to preservation of American Civil War history. Star Trek weekend

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, 9 a.m. Thursday, March 23 with "Shore Leave for Trekkies" - a weekend of episodes, movies, costumes and games at Elijah Clark State Park, 2959 McCormick Hwy. in Lincolnton. Parking is $5, films are free, and some events will include a fee. Food concessions will be available during movies. Civil War Roundtable

The monthly meeting of the Civil War Roundtable of Augusta will be at 6 p.m. April 17, Goodwill's Snelling Center, 3165 Washington Road, Augusta. Vince Dooley, board member of the Civil War Trust, presents on "Leading From the Front." Coach Dooley is former UGA head football coach and athletic director and a former Marine. Pawprints Foundation and Long Dog Rescue are accepting donations of dog, cat, puppy and kitten food year-round at Animal House, Wild Birds Unlimited, Grovetown Farm & Garden, Vineyard Wine Market and Martinez/National Hills Animal Hospitals.
