Brown bag series

As part of its continuing Brown Bag History Series, the Augusta Museum of History presents, “That was the Year That Was, 1864,” a talk given by Bill Kirby, on Wednesday, March 5, at 12:30 p.m. The longtime columnist for The Augusta Chronicle will include stories of: social events, commerce, education, sports, and in general happenings in Augusta and the nation in 1864. The lectures are free to Museum members and $3 for non-members. Participants should bring a lunch and the Museum will only be providing beverages. Lunch can begin as early as 11:30 a.m.; the lecture runs from 12:30-1 p.m.

Career Expo

The Job Connection of Goodwill Industries of the CSRA will hold its Spring Career Expo from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Snelling Center, 3165 Washington Road at Fury’s Ferry Road. The Career Expo is free to job-seekers and potential employers. More than 30 employers and community resources will be on site to provide information about current job openings in the Augusta area.

In preparation for the Career Expo, Goodwill’s Job Connection adjacent to the Snelling Center will hold a Job Fair Boot Camp on Wednesday, March 5. Fundraiser

On March 16 and 17, Adas Yeshurun Synagogue will be slicing over 400 pounds of kosher corned beef. This year’s goal is to sell over 1,000 lunches. The lunches consist of an overstuffed corned beef sandwich on rye bread with pickle spear, condiments, chips, a drink and freshly-baked brownie at a cost of just $10.

Choral event

Columbia County Choral Society is hosting a Guest Night on March 4. The ability to read music is not a must, only that you can match pitch, blend your voice with others, and enjoy mastering choral music. Join members for fellowship at 6:30 p.m. Rehearsal begins at 7 p.m. Singers of all voice parts who are at least 16 years old are invited to attend. Show choir competition

The Lakeside High School competitive Showchoir, Soundsation, will host its 3rd annual Georgia Vocal Invitational competition on Saturday, March 8, at Lakeside High School. This is Georgia’s only Showchoir competition for middle and high school show choirs.

Students may also compete in a solo competition. Tickets will be available at the door: $8 for adults, $5 for students and children 5 and younger are free. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. with the first competition beginning at noon. The high school competition will begin at approximately 2 p.m.

Scholarships

Applications for the Barbara C. Beazley Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by The Columbia County Foundation for Children, are now available.

Applicants must be Columbia County residents and intend to enroll or are currently enrolled in a college or technical school. Paper applications may be obtained from school counselors’ offices in all Columbia County high schools or downloaded from the website at: www.ccfchildren.com.

The scholarship is need-based. The deadline to apply and submit documents is May 30, 2014.

Art show

2nd Annual River Island Art Show will be held 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the River Island Clubhouse, 1570 River Island Parkway, Evans. Wine and refreshments will be provided and entertainment by Blue Mountain Highway.

Senior pageant

Contestant interviews are underway for the 2014 Ms. Senior Georgia-Carolina Pageant to be held Sept. 6 at the Kroc Center.The pageant is open to ladies of the CSRA (both Georgia and South Carolina) who are 55 years of age or above. Please contact Pat Schlipp at (706) 664-3896 for further details.
