Volunteers needed

Tax-Aide volunteers are needed to join our team of local volunteers for the upcoming tax season. You'll receive training and materials in a welcoming environment. Class reunion

Harlem High School class of 1978 is planning a 40th year reunion. If you or anyone you know is a 1978 graduate, please send your name and address to gmclerk1960@yahoo.com. The reunion is planned for Saturday, June 23, 2018.

Fall Festival

Elijah Clark State Park will hold its annual Fall Festival from 4 - 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7. Hayrides, pumpkin patch, miniature golf, and many games and crafts. Visitors can make a weekend out of it. Friday night Oct. 6 Elijah Clark State Park will be showing a movie. Saturday morning at 10 a.m., for $5 guests can participate in pumpkin and scarecrow archery. Sunday night is bingo night fall themed prizes. Cost for bingo is $1-$2. Voter registration

Representatives from the Columbia County Board of Elections will conduct a Voter Registration Drive at the Oliver Hardy Festival in Harlem, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7. The final day to register for the upcoming Nov. 7 municipal elections is Oct. 12.

Oliver Hardy Festival

The 29th Annual Oliver Hardy Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 in Downtown Harlem. Food and craft vendors, inflatables, live entertainment, and Laurel and Hardy impersonators will be on hand for a day of fun! Parkinsons support walk

The CSRA Parkinson Support Group will host its 18th annual POP Walk for the People of Parkinson's fundraiser from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 7, at First Baptist Church, 3500 Walton Way Ext. Augusta. Registration opens and activities begin at 9:00am, the walk starts at 10:00am and ends by noon. Junior Rangers

Schools out Monday Oct. 9, Elijah Clark staff will be hosting a Fall Themed Jr. Ranger program. Children ages 6-12 will participate in scarecrow archery, apply bobbing, gourd painting and more. Cost is $15 for the first child and $10 for additional children. Please pre-register for Jr. Rangers by calling the park office at (706) 359-3458. Painting and drawing

The Artist's Guild of Columbia County presents Painting and Drawing for children ages 1 - 12 at 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., and for Teens ages 13 - 17 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25 at the Church of our Savior, 4227 Columbia Rd. Cost is $20 per each weekly session for ages 7 - 12 years old. Students will learn to draw from life using different drawing, coloring and painting media. Movies in Evans

Screen on the Green will show three movies in the month of October at the Columbia County Amphitheater. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Oct. 6; Goosebumps, Oct. 13; and Hotel Transylvania, Oct. 20. Cost is $1 for entry and all movies start at 7:15 p.m.

The Harlem High School Class of 1997 will be holding their 20 Year Reunion from 7-11 p.m., Saturday Oct. 14, at the Hyatt Place Augusta Hotel. Fire run

The FireK17 is a family friendly 5k fun run beginning at 8 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Lady A Amphitheater in Evans. Taking place during Fire Safety Month, firefighters will also compete by running in their bunker gear for bragging rights and a trophy. Proceeds will benefit FireKFiveK, a nonprofit corporation that raises money for firefighters or the families of firefighters who are battling cancer; www.firekfivek.com.

Pumpkin patch

The Marvin Corner Pumpkin Patch will be open Saturday at noon, Oct. 7 until Oct. 31. Pumpkins, gourds, mums and bales of straw for sale to support missions and community outreach. The Columbia County Kiwanis club monthly networking event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at TBonz in Evans. Club members, friends and relatives are welcome to attend the informal get together. The club holds its meeting the second Tuesday of every month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friends are welcome to attend.

Candidate Forum

The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and the News-Times in partnership with the Harlem Merchant's Association will hold a candidate forum at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 10. The forum will welcome candidates qualified to run for city council seats in both Harlem and Grovetown in the upcoming November municipal election. The forum will take place at the new Harlem Library and will have a Q&A session from the public.

Pink Friday

Grovetown Parks and Recreation will hold a Pink Friday event at Liberty Park Community Center from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13. Cost is $5 and includes information on breast cancer awareness, support and beyond and open mic night, inflatables, food and craft vendors. Beauty pageant

Contestants are wanted for the 2017 Miss Columbia County Fair beauty pageant. The Merchant's Association of Columbia County sponsors the scholarship event each year and is open to single women in the CSRA for ages 17-23. Judging will be in interview, fitness wear and evening gown. The winner will receive an $800 scholarship, up from years past of $500. Flood map open house

A public Open House is being held Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Patriots Park Gym, 5445 Columbia Road, Grovetown, from 5-7 p.m. Residents throughout Columbia County are invited to attend this Open House. No formal presentation will be made so residents and business owners can visit at their convenience to view the new flood maps, understand how their properties may be affected, review options that they have and learn more about financial and material steps that they may need to take to protect their investment. Marching band invitational

Grovetown High School Band students will host the 8th Annual Band of Warriors Invitational Band Competition on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Grovetown High School. The invitational will host 10 high schools. Performances be held from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m. and from 6:30 - 10:30 p.m., with awards ceremony immediately following. Cost to attend is $7.

Ladies Night Out

Harlem's 2nd Annual Ladies Night Out will begin at 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21. Ladies are invited to gather for a fun night out filled with music, food, and friends, all while exploring Harlem's downtown district and meeting local business owners. Pick up your passport and map at Grimaud-Reeves Realty and take a stroll through Harlem, visiting merchants and vendors. At each stop, enjoy an appetizer and drinks. Then, make your way to Red Oak Manor to end the night with raffle prizes and live music by Jason White. The event is free and open to the public.

Chorus concert

Harmony River Chorus of Sweet Adelines' International, a member of the Columbia County Arts Council, is performing a fall concert called: "Haunting Harmony" at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 471 W. Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat so others can eat will be held from 6 - 9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26 at Evans Towne Center Park. The event is free, with admission being one canned good item or more to enter. All canned good items benefit the Columbia County Community Cares Food Pantry.

Golf Championship

The 2017 Gordon Lakes Golf Club Championship will be held 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28 at Gordon Lakes Golf Club located at 537 Range Road on Fort Gordon. Enjoy two days on the links at the Gordon Lakes Golf Club Championship. This tournament is 36 holes, and players will be put in flights after 1st round scores. Entry fees are: $35 members, $50 active duty and $60 for retired military and civilians. Entry fee includes golf and cart both days, as well as, prizes and meal on Sunday. Alzheimer's Walk

The Alzheimer's Association welcomes Augusta residents including Burke, Columbia, Washington, Screven Emanuel, Glascock, Greene, Jefferson, Jenkins, Lincoln, McDuffie, Richmond, Taliaferro, Warren and Wilkes counties to join the fight to end Alzheimer's by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's on Nov. 4, at Columbia County Amphitheater in Evans.

The Fort Gordon Retiree Council meets quarterly to keep the Fort Gordon command structure aware of issues, concerns and needs of the military retiree population of all branches of service in the Fort Gordon area of responsibility.
