Military Newsmakers

Kenneth Thomas Pinion, formerly of Harlem, is being awarded a degree in English and film studies from North Carolina State University, having earned his BA in English, with honors, from Armstrong State University in 2013.

He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies and has presented his research at various academic conferences.

Ken will begin the doctoral program in cultural studies at Stony Brook University (SUNY) in August.

He is the son of Gene and Cindy LaCount Pinion, formerly of Harlem, and is the grandson of Thomas E. LaCount of Grovetown.

Chadwick C. “Chad” Abbott of Martinez, a Mississippi State graduate student, is part of a national group honored recently for achievements in agricultural research.

He is among 18 selections for a Future Leaders in Science Award given annually by the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America. Chosen from among 70 applicants, he and the other winners received an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for Congressional Visit Day, where they helped advocate to members of Congress on behalf of agricultural research.

Abbott is pursuing a master’s degree in agronomy in MSU’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Before coming to Starkville, he received a bachelor’s degree in wildlife technology from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.

Army Spc. James L. Tucker has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia. Tucker is the son of Tony Tucker, of Rock Hill, S.C., and Carole R. Plyler, of Grovetown, Ga. He is the stepson of Gary D. Plyler of Grovetown. He is a 2007 graduate of Greenbrier High School, Evans. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2012 from Charleston Southern University, Charleston, S.C.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Ryan A. Owen graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Owen is the son of Antoinette Montani, of Augusta, and brother of Meagan A. Waldron. He is a 2008 graduate of Evans High School.

Air Force Airman Adam J. Lord graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Lord is the son of Larry W. and Kimberly A. Lord, of Augusta. He is a 2013 graduate of Lakeside High School.

Air Force Airman Jessica R. Kornmann graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Kornmann is the daughter of David R. Kornmann and Melissa D. Kornmann, of Oakville, Wash., and Donna M. Beals, of Olympia, Wash. She is the granddaughter of Shirly Kornmann, of Lacey, Wash., granddaughter of Joann A. Beals, of Olympia, Wash., niece of Debra Leuth, of Reedsberg, Wis., niece of Michael W. Beals, of Olympia, Wash., and cousin of Christiana Pagel, of Grovetown.

She is a 2011 graduate of Olympia High School, Olympia, Wash.

Air Force Airman Kalon M. Magnuson graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Magnuson is the son of Mike Magnuson, of Watertown, Wis., and Cindy Le Starge, of Janesville, Wis., and brother of Jonathan Palsma, of Grovetown.

He is a 2014 graduate of Watertown High School, Watertown, Wis.

Army Col. Robert M. Murray has graduated from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pa., and earned a master’s degree in strategic studies.

The college is the Army’s senior educational institution.

The 10-month curriculum of the Army’s senior officer school is designed to prepare and train officers of all the U.S. military branches of service, foreign military officers, as well as senior civilian officials of federal agencies, to serve in top-level command and staff positions with the U.S. armedforces worldwide. He is currently serving as Electronic Warfare Officer with the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.

He has served in the military for 23 years and is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Murray is the son of Carole M. Murray, of Rochester, Minn., and nephew of Alice Hilts, of La Palma, Calif., Lowell Saterdalen, of Stewartville, Minn., Randy Krause of Zumbrota, Minn., and John Murray, of Carpinteria, Calif. He is the husband of Suzanne Murray of Evans, Ga., and father of Ryan Murray, of Lubbock, Texas. He is a 1982 graduate of Zumbrota High School, Zumbrota, Minn. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1986 from Winona State University, Winona, Minn.

Air Force Reserve Airman Melissa N. Clopein graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

Clopein is the daughter of Nuran and Will Clopein, of Dallas, Ga. She is also the granddaughter of Gloria and Mike Hoover of Arnold, Md., niece of Seher Hamurtas of Dallas, Ga., and cousin of Tulay Kerkula of Grovetown. The airman graduated in 2012 from Paulding County High School, Dallas, Ga.

Air Force Airman Jonathan M. Dewall graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Dewall is the son of Sheri A. Dewall of Evans.

He is a 2014 graduate of Greenbrier High School, Evans.
