Local talent show

Local performers will take the stage tonight at the Columbia County Amphitheater in Evans to prove their talent.

The Columbia County Amateur Series resumes from 7-9 p.m. and will continue most Fridays through Sept. 8.

The series, based on America’s Got Talent, features 40 performers between the ages of 7 and 60 whose talents include dancing, hula-hooping and singing.

A winner is named each month and that participant will go on to compete in the September finale for the grand prize.

 

Saturday voting

Columbia County voters can head to the polls Saturday to cast their ballots for the July 31 primary election.

Saturday voting is from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Columbia County Board of Elections office, located at 500 Faircloth Drive, Building E, of the Evans Government Complex.

In addition, two satellite locations will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. for Saturday voting. They are located at Patriots Park, 5445 Columbia Road, Grovetown; and Savannah Rapids Pavilion, 3300 Evans-to-Locks Road, Martinez.

Political dinner

A political dinner in Evans Saturday night will give candidates running opposed in the upcoming primary election the chance to speak to constituents.

Columbia County Citizens for Good Government is holding the forum from 5-9 p.m. at 5335 Hereford Farm Road in Evans.

Unless severe weather occurs, the event will continue as planned rain or shine.

The event is free and includes food and music. Donations will be accepted.

Guests are asked to bring folding chairs.

Those confirmed to speak at the event are Columbia County school board District 1 candidates Carolyn Chase and David Dekle; school board District 4 candidates Deborah Fisher, Bobby Strickland and incumbent Roxanne Whitaker; Columbia County Commission District 2 candidates Lee Benedict and incumbent Trey Allen; Commission District 3 candidates Butch Holley and incumbent Charles Allen; chief magistrate judge candidates Jason Hasty, Christopher Hudson and Jason Troiano; and state House District 121 candidates Barry Fleming and Mike Popplewell.

Other politicians scheduled to speak include state House District 33 candidate David Vogel; state Senate District 23 candidate Jesse Stone; 10th District candidate Stephen Simpson; and 12th District candidates Rick Allen, Lee Anderson, Wright McLeod and Maria Sheffield.

Autograph signing

Former University of Georgia and professional football players DJ Shockley and Verron Haynes will sign autographs for fans Saturday.

Following their involvement in a youth football camp earlier that day at Augusta Christian Schools, the athletes are headed to two different locations to sign free autographs.

From 4:30-5:30 p.m., Shockley is scheduled to appear at Academy Sports & Outdoors, 4210 Washington Road, Evans. Haynes will greet fans from 5-6 p.m. at BirdDog Grille, 3851 Evans-to-Locks Road, Martinez.
