As reported 50 years ago in The Columbia News, Thursday, Oct. 5, 1961:
County finances examined
The presentments of the September term of the Columbia County Grand Jury are thorough in the area of county finances.
They show that the county commissioners finished the previous six-month period -- from March 1 to Aug. 1 -- with a balance of $808.94.
Only a few improvements were recommended. The jury said more space is needed in the Clerk of Court's office, and recommended that all broken windows in the jail be replaced.
Teen is fined for undimmed lights
All they wanted was to caution the young driver to dim his lights.
But the 16-year-old Columbia County boy gunned his motor and took off when he saw the police car turn around on him in Thomson Friday night, officers said.
The youth was stopped about five miles out on the Whiteoak Road after reaching speeds up to 85 mph and running three stop signs.
All told, he had to pay a $116 fine.
