Like clockwork, Christmas comes in tripping over the trappings of the season. Before I can utter, "Oh holy night," it's at my front door jingling the bell. To herald in the holidays, our tree joined the hall-decking party three branches to the wind.
Instead of children, Santa Claus had puppies in his lap at the Best Western White Columns Inn on Saturday afternoon. Santa's visit was part of Kibble for Kritters, a pet supply donation program that benefits the CSRA Happy Tails Rescue.
The Thomson Fire Department responded to a call at 713 Matthews St. at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 15.
Upon arrival, personnel found that the occupants were already out of the house and that light smoke was visible.

Kathie Mogish says Tamara Hammond has the role of First Baptist Church's Nativity angel for many Christmases to come.
“I was outside a few years ago and a family drove through and I heard a little boy say, ‘Look Momma, it’s a real angel,’ ” said Mogish, the event’s director. “So he was convinced it was the real thing. So I told Tamara, ‘You’ve got the job for life.’ ”
Fire personnel responded to a structure fire at 3982 Wrens Highway early Saturday morning. McDuffie County Fire/Rescue and McDuffie County EMS were dispatched at 7:21 a.m. to a wood-frame, single-family residence on property owned by Patrick Demmons.
An amended hotel-motel tax ordinance could herald an increase in revenue for McDuffie County. The change allows hotels to charge an occupancy tax for the initial 30 consecutive days of continuous occupancy, instead of the previous 10-day maximum.
