Columbia County officials Tuesday are expected to debate a proposed ordinance regulating fundraiser races that block county streets.

The ordinance might be somewhat streamlined, however, from its original proposal after county officials questioned the amount of red tape involved.

Unbelted toddler killed in Appling wreck

An Augusta toddler died in a Thursday afternoon wreck that seriously injured her mother.

Sky Allen, 2, died from injuries she sustained in a single-car crash on Ray Owens Road in front of North Columbia Elementary School, according to Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins. An autopsy was to be performed Friday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta, Collins said.

Running a marathon in all 50 states in memory of fallen soldiers is the goal of Retired Chief Warrant Officer Scott Sunday of Grovetown.

“I did 13 last year, and I plan to do 30 this year,” said Sunday, who is putting a twist on his upcoming appearance in the Jacksonville Run For the Warriors Half Marathon on May 18 in Jacksonville, N.C. He will run this event wearing an elevation mask and a weighted vest while raising money for the organization Hope for the Warriors.

Despite the objections of residential neighbors, Columbia County’s Planning Commission Thursday agreed to rezone a dormant Martinez office plaza for townhomes.

The 3.25 acre site on Furys Ferry Road at Old Ferry Road was developed in 2008 as an office park, laid out with parking lots, curbs and landscaping. No offices have been built on the site, and last year First Bank seized the land through foreclosure.
