Walking toward the main entrance of the Columbia County Detention Center, Maj. John Wheeler passed a familiar face in the hallway. “Deputy James Paschal,” Wheeler said. “How are you, sir?”
Paschal, 61, has spent half his life working at the detention center, a career that began Jan. 16, 1984.
He was hired as deputy jailer at the county’s original detention center, designed for 16 inmates. The current jail, on County Camp Road in Appling, holds 344.
