Expansion projects continue for several Columbia County churches.

The congregation of Second Mount Moriah Baptist Church recently began attending services in a new sanctuary on Appling-Harlem Highway.

The church moved into the new sanctuary in March and held a dedication ceremony on April 15, said the Rev. Henderson Roberson, pastor of the church.

“We’re thoroughly satisfied,” Roberson said. “We’re enjoying it.”

The 125-year-old church is located on Bell Street in Harlem. That building, constructed in the 1960s, has problems.

Belvedere First Baptist

• The men’s prayer breakfast is at 7 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at Sunrise Grill.

• The annual student spaghetti dinner will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. May 18. Cost is $6. The last day to purchase tickets is May 16.

Belvedere United Methodist

• The United Methodist Women meet at 10 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the fellowship hall.

Four dangerous roads in Columbia County soon should get some added signs warning motorists of the potential hazards.

County commissioners voted Tuesday to add flashing signs near three intersections and a sharp curve.

Intersections receiving overhead warning beacons are Ray Owens and White Oak roads, William Few Parkway at Chamblin Road, and Harlem Grovetown and Louisville roads. A curve on South Old Belair Road near the intersection on South Belair Road will get a road-mounted warning beacon.

Every spring, I get questions about mole crickets and clover mites. Mole crickets can destroy lawns and are hard to control, while clover mites feed on a range of plants and can be a nuisance when they invade our homes. When clover mites move in, there can be thousands of them at a time. I have seen brick walls covered with the tiny red mites.

Mole crickets damage turf by tunneling through the sod, and the Southern mole cricket eats the roots of turfgrass. The tawny mole cricket is a predator and eats other insects, but does a great deal of damage by tunneling.
