Man accused of battering woman

A man was arrested after police said he hit a woman so hard she blacked out.

Police arrived to the 300 block of Mears Street in Martinez last week on a report of domestic violence.

Upon arrival, Jon S. Carswell answered, the door at the home, and, according to the police report, he appeared agitated and nervous.

Carswell told police he had been in an argument with the victim, but that he was not physical with her and that any injuries had been inflicted by another man, according to the report.

Police stated that they found the victim inside the residence, in a bed, curled up in the fetal position and crying. The woman had visible swelling and bruising on the right side of her face.

The victim told police that they argued about past relationships and that Carswell became angry when she refused to get back together with him, the report said. She said Carswell then bear-hugged her so tightly she couldn't breathe, before holding her against a sliding glass door, according to police.

Carswell moved the woman into the living room, according to the report, where two males were present whom the victim did not know. Carswell slapped her across the face so hard that she said she blacked out, according to the report. He then jumped on top of her and held his hand over her mouth and nose, restricting her breathing, police said.

EMS crews reported swelling on the left side of the victim's face, trouble hearing in her left ear, bruises on her nose and rib cage and multiple bruises on her left shin. The victim refused to be transported to a hospital, against the advice of EMS.

Carswell was charged with battery/family violence and taken to the Columbia County Detention Center.

Fraud leads to big cell bills

An Evans woman called police after discovering that her Social Security number had been used to open accounts with two phone companies that had thousands of dollars in unpaid bills turned over to collections.

The Verizon Wireless account showed $1,187 owed, and the Sprint Mobile account came to $3,855.

The woman said she learned of the accounts when she applied for a home loan, according to the incident report.
