Male shoplifters caught using purse for thefts

Two Hephzibah men were arrested Thursday after they were caught using a purse to shoplift from Walmart.

Altaye Levelle Knight, 20, and Na­thaniel James Pace III, 18, both of Storey Mill Estates, were charged with shoplifting.

Ex-treasurer charged with $260k thefts

The former treasurer of an Evans neighborhood association has been charged with stealing more than a quarter-million dollars from the organization.

Laurie Wainwright Vanover, , of the block of, was charged with multiple counts of financial transaction card fraud, computer theft, theft by taking and theft by conversion after turning herself in Tuesday morning at the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, said Capt. Steve Morris.

Vanover was released after posting $40,400 bond, Morris said.

Evans man charged with child porn

An Evans man was arrested Wednesday after authorities discovered child pornography on his laptop.

David Anthony Alexander, 36, of Skeeter Lane, was charged with sexual exploitation of children/possession of child pornography as part of Operation Guarding Innocence.

The three-month investigation, coordinated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, targeted 98 people statewide involved in Internet child porn trading.

Online date harasses man after learning he’s married

An Evans man told deputies Tuesday that a woman he met through on online dating site harassed him at work after learning he was married.

The 28-year-old man said he met the woman on Zoosk and they dated for a few weeks. She bought him an amplifier for his car, but after discovering he was married, the woman asked to be repaid. The man agreed.
