After van theft, Augusta woman is released

An Augusta woman was released from custody in North Augusta after being extradicted from Columbia County last week.

Casi Lynne Sommers, 27, turned herself in to the Columbia County Detention Center on Dec. 23 on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, on a warrant out of South Carolina. Sommers is accused of taking a van without permission that belonged to Shannon Baskins, a Martinez woman, who was found dead at a North Augusta apartment complex Dec. 10.

The cause of Baskin's death has not been determined.

A warrant was issued by North Augusta Department of Public Safety for Sommers on Dec. 17 for the van's theft.

According to Lt. Tim Thornton of the public safety department, Sommers may have "historical information about the 24 hours prior to the death of Shannon Baskins that will prove helpful in the determination of the cause of death."

"Based on the follow up interview with Ms. Sommers with NADPS Detectives following her return to South Carolina, it is still unclear as to her role in the incident with Ms. Baskins," Thornton wrote in an email last week. "Ms. Sommers was booked at North Augusta Public Safety then transported directly to the Aiken County Detention Center."

Thornton said police are waiting for toxicology results, although the autopsy showed no signs of trauma and no evidence to support a physical altercation. Toxicology results can take anywhere from four to six weeks, Thornton said.
