Mongan: Jesus is my everything

Posted: September 13, 2017 - 1:43am

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." (Mt. 16:13-16)

As I prayed about what to write this week, those words seem to be echoing in my soul! "Who do you say I am?" When Jesus asked his disciples this question, they too had to ponder and wrestle with their answer.

Each one of us has to do the same.

This past week, Pat and I found ourselves on retreat in Charleston, S.C. I, who love to live on retreat, found it a much-needed rest in the Lord. This question was presented to us by the retreat master was, "Who is God to you?" After his talk we were asked to go off to a quiet place and ponder that question. I found a rocking chair and sat down. It was on a porch that was overlooking a beautiful view of God's creation. As I rocked and rested, I felt like a little child cradled in my Father's arms. The scripture, "For this is what the Lord says: ‘I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem,' " came alive. (Isaiah 66:12-13)

As I entered into my "prayer chamber," Jesus met me there with His love. Like a student who has studied for a test, I began writing what was on my heart. I already knew the answer to the question, "Who is God to you?" So I began to recall all that Jesus is to me. He has revealed Himself to me in so many ways. Sometimes Jesus is my best friend when I feel all alone. Other times He is my healer when I need a touch of grace in my body, mind or soul. He is my exhorter when I go the wrong way and my encourager when I get discouraged. He is my counselor when I need wisdom. He sticks closer to me than a brother. He is my Heavenly Father who teaches, trains, and loves me no matter what. He is a warrior who has my "back" when the battle gets tough. Most importantly in my life, Jesus is my Savior and my Lord. For me, Jesus is my "Everything." The many roles He plays in my life gives me the confidence to go to Him no matter what because I knowing His love is never ending.

If Jesus asked you today, "Who do you say I am?" What would your answer be? Knowing who He is helps us to be who He has called us to be. His Word reminds us daily that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, but apart from Him, we can do nothing!

I challenge you to get alone with Jesus this week. Take some time to soul-search and to wrestle with the question, "Who do you say I am?" The answer may surprise you. It sure surprised Saint Paul!
