The hallways of Columbia County schools were abuzz once again as students and parents roamed them together Monday night during the first round of open houses.

"Tonight I am giving them a general overview of what the class is, ways the parents can keep in contact with me, ways I can keep in contact with them. Ways that students can stay on top of assignments and notes in class," said nutrition and cooking pathways teacher Liza Davis during open house at Greenbrier High School.

Davis spoke with incoming sophomore Raymond Collins III who will take the nutrition class first period on his first day back to school Monday, Aug. 7.

Greenbrier High School Principal Chris Seagraves said this year's open house was new and improved.

"We tried something new this year. We asked our parents to download their children's schedules before they came," Seagraves said. "In years past they would have to wait in a long line to get a paper schedule."

Seagraves said that feedback from parents was confirmation that the change was well-received.

"From (noon) to tonight, the schedules weren't going to change. So that way they could go ahead and download it and then they don't have to wait in that long line and can go right straight to where they need to go," Seagraves said.

"They have loved it," he added.

Open houses were held for incoming freshmen across the county, followed shortly by sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Open houses at the county elementary schools will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, preceded by the building dedication of Grovetown Elementary School at 5:30 p.m.

School officials announced Monday a delay in holding an open house at Harlem Middle School. The open house for all grades was moved from Tuesday to 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4.

"All students, along with their families, are encouraged to attend, to receive student schedules and to meet teachers and school administration," the release stated. "Preceding Open House, the building dedication and ribbon-cutting will take place at 4 p.m. in the school's cafeteria."

All other county sixth graders attended their respective open houses Tuesday, Aug. 1, and all other county 7th and 8th graders will tour their schools today from 4-7 p.m.
