A Winder man has been arrested and charged in a crash that killed an elderly Thomson man.

Steven Scott Rockmore, 43, was arrested Wednesday and charged with driving too fast for conditions, following too closely and second degree vehicular homicide.

According to police reports, Rockmore was traveling west on I-20 when he failed to slow to traffic and crashed into the back of a chevy cobalt, driven by the victim, Gilbert Engel, 84.

First responders were called to the scene around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday to mile marker 186. Engel was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 a.m. from blunt force trauma, according to Columbia County Coroner Harriett Garrison.

Garrison said that it appeared Engel was returning home from an eye doctor appointment Wednesday when the crash occurred.

Engel's vehicle was pushed into the rear of a third vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
