Armed Forces Day celebration set for this weekend

The annual Armed Forces Day celebration Thunder Over Evans will be held Saturday, May 20.

Sponsored by the Augusta Warrior Project and others from across the Augusta area, the event will take place from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Evans Towne Center Park and the Lady A Amphitheater.

"A Salute to Our Heroes," opening ceremony will commence at 4 p.m. with musicby the 282nd U.S. Army Band, followed by remarks from Major General John B. Morrison Jr., commanding general, U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon, according to a news release. A mass induction ceremony of new recruits into the Army will also take place, along with the reciting of the soldier creed by more than 300 soldiers.

Throughout the afternoon, there will be military demonstrations and displays, along with a demonstration from the Columbia County working dogs. There will also be an extreme freestyle motorcross motorcycle stunt show, timberworks "Lumberjack Show," kickboxing exhibition, and a kids zone with vendors and food.

A live band concert begins at 7:45 p.m. followed by a mega fireworks display at approximately 9:15 p.m.
