The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the man injured in a wreck Saturday on Interstate 20 that has led to four firefighters and two deputies being arrested regarding theft of items at the scene, was a cellphone accessories distributor.

Columbia County sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Smith and Deputy Wesley Harden were charged with theft by taking and later fired. Arrest warrants said Smith took a cellphone cover and Harden two Bluetooth items, a cellphone cover and a cellphone charger.

Columbia County Fire Rescue Lt. Christopher D. Ganther took Bluetooth devices, a cellphone case and a cellphone dash mount, according to the warrants. He was later fired, along with Columbia County firefighter Randall Atchison, who was charged with giving a false statement but not theft. Augusta firefighter Wesley Hughes is accused of taking a cellphone charger, while warrants said Sgt. Antoine Mullins took a Bluetooth device. Both are charged with theft by taking and suspended without pay.

The investigation began Sunday after another deputy reported that wrongdoing or a possible crime had occurred at the crash site.

Police said the suspects took the items while responding to a two-vehicle crash on I-20 near mile marker 195 on Feb. 20..
