A parking area of a Grovetown trail system will soon be improved.

City officials signed an agreement a Monday council meeting for a state Department of Transportation grant to upgrade the Wrightsboro Road parking area of the Trails at Euchee Creek.

City Public Works Director Michael Woods said the Wrightsboro Road bridge over Euchee Creek was replaced by DOT several years ago. Woods said DOT was asked to leave the old road bed to provide an entrance and parking area to the trails in exchange for property the city gave up to DOT.

“It’s not that great,” Woods said. “The grant, part of it is going to be used to better the parking area down there.”

The Transportation Enhancement grant is for $19,670 with a $4,917.60 match from the city combined for a $24,588 total cost for the project, according to City Administrator Shirley Beasley.

The project will also include a gate to prevent people from driving on the trails, and a nice sign, Woods said.

The park, which opened in the spring of 2004 on 44.7 acres of land bordering Euchee Creek, has been extended several times using grant funds.

“They are heavily used,” Woods said of the extensive trail system.
