A new Hyatt Place hotel's construction is underway on Mason McKnight Jr Parkway across from Gander Mountain. The facility is part of a growing development just off Interstate 20.

Construction began in March on Columbia County’s newest hotel.

Work began in mid-March on the site of Hyatt Place, on three acres on Mason McKnight Jr. Parkway behind Sprint Foods, just off Interstate 20. The utilities have been installed and foundation work should soon begin on the upscale service hotel, said John Engler, the vice president of local development firm McKnight Properties.

The four-story hotel is planned to include 112 guest rooms, a fitness center and outdoor pool.

“It’s a mid-priced level hotel with higher end features in the common areas and amenities,” Engler said.

Construction is expected to take less than a year.

“The goal is to make next Masters, March 1, 2016,” Engler said.

The hotel is a part of the large mixed-use development on Mason McKnight Jr. Parkway that already includes CarMax, the 140-unit Gateway Crossing Luxury Apartments and outdoors retailer Gander Mountain, which opened in September.

“It’s just another one of the steps,” Engler said, adding the development of the large site is progressing. “We always planned to have a hotel in the development.”

About 40 acres remain undeveloped on the site in Columbia and Richmond Counties.

Engler said he’s had “some interest” in the 200,000-square-foot retail space next to Gander Mountain and other locations on the site that are already graded and ready for construction. The site also will be heavily marketed at an upcoming International Council of Shopping Centers convention.

He hopes to finalize some new tenants and make announcements soon.
