Football season is around the bend

Sept. 19 –- Evans at Lakeside

This will be a huge game in terms of deciding who the top dog in Columbia County will be for 2014. Last year, this game was tabbed by MaxPreps as a National Game of the Week as part of their Rivalry Series. The Knights rose to the occasion by shocking everyone in attendance in a rousing 26-21 come-from-behind win.

With only 50 seconds left in the contest, Lakeside held a 21-13 lead, but Ronnie Graham raced 8 yards for a score to cut the lead to 21-13. Evans missed on a two-point conversion try, but did not give up. Instead, the Knights recovered an onsides kick, then quarterback Matlin Marshall lofted a pass to Joacinto Grimes, who had gotten behind the Lakeside secondary, with 21 seconds left for the game-winning score.

To add to the stinging defeat, while up 21-13, Lakeside had the ball inside the Evans 10 yard line twice, but came away with two failed field goal attempts. This game will also feature a half dozen terrific college prospects led by Lakeside safety Rashad Roundtree and Evans QB/athlete Matlin Marshall.

Oct. 10 – Grovetown at Greenbrier

A couple of teams looking to rebound from disappointing seasons in 2013. It will be strange for me to see Jarret Troxler wearing Green and Gold, but this should be entertaining – three of the teams’ four head-to-head matchups have been decided by four points or less.

We will already know a lot about a new look and newly inspired Greenbrier squad. The hiring of Troxler has spurred a renaissance of sorts for the program. Greenbrier will have a couple of speedy athletes that could pose a problem for the Warriors in WR/DB Warren Coombs and RB Jamal Richard.

Oct. 24 – Jefferson County at Harlem

The Bulldogs enjoyed a nice season last year. They finished 7-3 to post the most wins for the school in 32 years. However, they will be facing a well coached, solid program that won eight games last season playing in Class AAA. This year the Warriors move down to Class AA, and will be one of the favorites. Jefferson County loses several key players from a tremendous defense in 2013, but they do bring back linebacker Daylan Williams, who was one of only 70 players in the state invited to participate in the inaugural Elite Junior Classic this spring.
