A pair of new Appling businesses – a local hardware store and a discount retailer – will give residents more convenient shopping options.
Appling Hardware opened June 7 at 3146 Ray Owens Road. The 1,800-square-foot store carries everything from lumber, shingles and siding to tools, ceiling fans, animal feed and lawn equipment, owner Pat Marano said.
“Everybody out here is tired of running to town, including me,” said Marano, who lives in Appling.
Marano owns the building at Ray Owens and Cobbham roads, which housed a convenience store for years until it closed in December. A building inspector and former builder, Marano renovated the space before opening the business.
“I’ve got two ICC (International Code Council) certifications in building inspection, so I’ve used every single piece of hardware in this building,” he said.
A few miles away, construction of a Dollar General store is nearing completion.
The Tennessee-based retailer is opening a store at 6572 Washington Road near Thurmond Lake this month, though a specific date has not been given.
From six to 10 employees will be hired, said Dollar General spokeswoman Crystal Ghassemi.
She directed those interested in applying to visit www.dollargeneral.com/careers.
“We look for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice,” Ghassemi said. “We also take demographic trends, competitive factors and traffic patterns into consideration.
We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions, as we generally
serve customers within a three- to five-mile radius, or 10-minute drive.”
Founded in 1993, Dollar General employs 100,000 people in more than 11,000 stores throughout the country.
The Appling store is one of nearly 40 stores in the area, with the next-closest site in Lincolnton, Ga.
