Dancers with Columbia County Ballet put on a special presentation during the sixth annual Art in the Park festival held behind the Columbia County Library in Evans in 2011. This year's Art in the Park will be Saturday.

If you’re an artist, art enthusiast or simply curious about how art is created, then the Art in the Park festival is the place to be Saturday.

The ninth annual arts festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Columbia County Amphitheater behind the Columbia County Library in Evans.

“The event itself gets bigger every year,” said event coordinator Cyndy Epps, Columbia County Arts president and former president of the Artists’ Guild of Columbia County. “My goal is we’re providing a venue for all these artists, the performing and visual artists, but we’re also providing the community the opportunity to experience it.”

More than 50 artists, artisans and arts groups will set up booths selling and displaying their works, providing information about their organizations or organizing children’s arts and crafts activities.

“I’ve got a little bit of everything,” Epps said of the varied arts booths. “I’m excited. We’ve got a good variety.”

Artists range from art glass, jewelry, fiber arts, knitting and crochet, leather works and wood crafts to pottery, photography and paintings.

The festival, put on by Columbia County Arts, also features artists demonstrations – artists actually creating works live.

“This is an arts event,” Epps said. “My goal is to really have something for everybody whether they want to try something they’ve never tried before or investigate something they didn’t know how it is made.

“To me, that’s exciting.”

A popular feature is returning to the festival – a sidewalk chalk art contest.

The contest starts at 10 a.m. and judging begins at 4 p.m. The fee is $15 and includes a sidewalk space and chalk. Winners of three age categories will receive cash prizes.

“We get some seriously competitive art work out there in all three categories,” Epps said.

The arts festival is free and open to the public.
