Beginning Monday, Blanchard Woods Park will be closed weekdays to make way for construction of the new BMX track and skate park.
The park on Hereford Road will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday for about 12 weeks, Columbia County Community and Leisure Services Division Director Barry Smith said.
The closure is to allow crews to construct the new $1.5 million skate park and BMX track slated to be open in the summer.
“They cleared the whole area, which is behind the stadium field,” Smith said. “They are having to bring in dirt to raise it up, bring it to a higher grade.”
Though earth from the initial park construction was stockpiled near the entrance, Smith said crews and their dumps truck and other equipment need use of the park’s main road.
“They need the roadway to haul the dirt, that’s the problem,” Smith said. “Now we’re taking that dirt and hauling it and it’s going right down the main road of Blanchard Woods Park. That’s why we’ve got to close the park because the contractor is scared somebody is going to get hurt.”
All of the park amenities will be available for use after 5 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends, when crews aren’t working. Portions of the cross country course will remain closed throughout the 12-week closure, Smith said.
The public should be careful and avoid construction zones and equipment. Smith said the park will reopen in time for the start of soccer season in July or August.
