Former Columbia County News-times sports editor Mike Howell will be laid to rest in Augusta later this month.

A memorial service for Howell is set for 4 p.m. April 19 at Thomas Poteet and Sons Funeral Home on Davis Road, according to his ex-wife Kristina Rester, who is assisting with the arrangements. Howell will be buried later at a private ceremony at Augusta’s Westover Cemetery, Rester said.

The body of the former sports writer was found March 22 in a storage shed at his home near Maggie Valley, N.C. Police said he was killed by a gunshot to the head and placed in a plastic storage bin.

North Carolina authorities have charged his 17-year-old daughter, Crystal Brooke Howell with murder in his death. She has been in police custody since March 23, when she was arrested at a Motel 6 on Boy Scout Road in Augusta.

According to search warrant affidavits, after her arrest Crystal Howell told North Carolina investigators she shot her father in the head with a shotgun sometime last month and later threw away the spent shell.

According to the arrest warrant, Mike Howell had been dead since Feb. 23.

Crystal Howell waived extradition in Augusta last week and was returned to North Carolina on April 3. She is being held without bond in the Heywood County Detention Center and has a court date set for April 28, sheriff’s officials said.
