It’s a ladies’ night out for charity.
The MOMS Club of Evans, a support group for mothers who stay home with their children, have home-based businesses or work part time is holding a “mom prom” to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Georgia’s Camp Sweet Life, on May 17 at the Snelling Center in Augusta.
Jenny Newton, the president of MOMS Club of Evans, said mom proms are happening across the country, and the event is a big ladies’ night out that’s used as a fundraiser. The event will include a DJ, photo booth, silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and swag bag valued at more than $50.
Newton said MOMS Club chose to benefit Camp Sweet Life, an overnight camp for children with Type 1 diabetes, because the group picks one organization geared toward children each year to do a service project.
“I read up on it (and) it’s just a time for them to go to camp and not have to worry about their diabetes and their parents get that time off from having to wake up in the middle of the night and check for insulin and everything,” Newton said.
“They just get to go be normal kids.”
Newton said the prom theme is “dancing under the stars.”
“We’re going to have all kinds of black and gold and silver stars around,” Newton said.
“We’re going to have a red carpet. We’re working on getting these cutouts of like Matthew McConaughey or Channing Tatum, some celebrities for pictures there.”
Newton said Mom Prom tickets are available online at the MOMS Club of Evans Mom Prom 2014 Facebook page or at three locations around the area at Whoa-Nuts, Pick It Up Gifts and 3 Chicks Gifts.
Tickets are $40. The price will increase April 1 to $45 and again on May 1 to $50, Newton said.
They also include entry into prom, food, candy, vendors, swag bags, a cash bar and two drink tickets.
Amanda Mascio, committee member on the Mom Prom said she doesn’t want the name mom prom to stop anyone who isn’t a mom from coming.
“The name is a little bit deceptive because it says mom prom and we want everyone to know it’s not just for moms, it’s just a really cute name,” Mascio said.
“It’s for any woman 21 and older in the area or maybe someone’s who’s coming in to visit and they’d like to have something to do on a fun night out.”
