A man charged with killing an Evans teen with his truck in October pled not guilty to vehicular homicide on Friday.
Kenneth Earl Gill, 59, of North Augusta, pled not guilty to second degree vehicular homicide, weaving and failure to exercise due care, proper used of radios and mobile telephones at an arraignment hearing in Evans.
Gill was arrested Oct. 13 after police say he veered off of Hardy McManus Road and hit 14-year-old Tyler J. Smith, who was sitting on a Go-kart at the end of his driveway.
Tyler was sitting on the Go-kart and his 6-year-old brother was standing nearby when the truck drifted onto the shoulder and plowed into the Go-kart before coming to rest at the base of a steep embankment.
Tyler was pinned under the rear wheels. Passersby stopped and lifted the truck off Tyler, who was airlifted to the Georgia Regents Medical Center.
He died a short time later.
Authorities say Gill was distracted by his cell phone at the time of the wreck.
