A former Fort Gordon garrison commander who has devoted his time to promoting the Army installation has been honored by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Thom Tuckey, the executive director of the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon, received the award at the chamber’s ninth annual banquet Tuesday night at the Columbia County Exhibition Center.

Tuckey said he was humbled by the honor.

“I do what I do because I love to serve soldiers,” he said. “That’s something that this community does really well.”

He said the coming expansion at Fort Gordon and the establishment of the Army Cyber Command headquarters there will only increase the post’s importance to the community.

“There’s a lot more soldiers coming here soon, and there’s a lot more for us to do,” he said.

Also honored Tuesday were two businesses: Gold Cross EMS was named Business of the Year, and Ladybug’s Flowers and Gifts received Small Business of the Year honors.

Darrell Byrd was honored with the chamber’s Volunteer of the Year award and Bob Kendra, of Kendra Financial Group, received the Ambassador of the Year award.

The second annual Leadership Columbia County Alumni Award went to Pat Goodwin, who was selected as the outstanding member of the 2013 class of the chamber’s leadership program.

Chamber President and CEO Tammy Shepherd said that in the coming year the organization would continue to promote workforce and leadership development and would continue encouraging residents to support local businesses. She
said the chamber also intends to create a youth leadership program focused more on technology and science.

“We all need to help other businesses understand that the chamber goes way beyond ribbon-cuttings.”
