Grovetown Mayor George James swears in City Council member Sylvia Martin at Monday's meeting. Another new council member, Vickie Cook, took the oath of office at the first meeting of the year.

Two new Grovetown City Council members took their oaths of offices at the city’s first monthly meeting of the year.

Retired school teacher Sylvia Martin and hairdresser Vicki Cook were sworn into office before the meeting began on Monday.

Martin and Cook were elected in November to replace incumbent Bruce Stoddard and Lee Briggs, who was appointed to fill the more than four months of former Councilman Sonny McDowell’s term. Stoddard, who served 12 years on the council, did not seek reelection.

Martin served on a community board involved in the city’s urban redevelopment Plan and has previously been considered for appointments to the council.

Also at the meeting, city officials announced that Cal Ripkin Baseball League will begin a new league centered at Liberty Park in Grovetown in the spring.

Construction of a new addition to the Trails at Euchee Creek also has begun. The addition will be along Reynolds Farm Road and won’t yet be connected to the existing trails.
