A second person died from injuries sustained in a crash that took the life of an Evans teen a week ago.
Former Greenbrier High School student Helen Reid, 18, died when the vehicle she was riding in hit a tree near Bath, S.C., on Jan. 8
Reid was the backseat passenger in a 2004 Jeep Cherokee, driven by Austin Beard, of North Augusta. At about 2 p.m., the Jeep ran off the side of Dixie Clay Road and struck an embankment and a tree, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Judd Jones.
The front-seat passenger, Tyler Gardner, 20, of Greenboro, N.C., was transported to the Georgia Regents Medical Center, where he was determined to have no brain function Thursday evening and was taken off of life support shortly thereafter, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
All three occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts, according to a crash investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Reid was ejected and died at the scene, Carlton said.
The Jeep was traveling at a high rate of speed and overturned, Carlton said. Reid’s funeral was held Sunday.
Gardner, formerly of Graniteville, moved to Greenboro for a job and was in town visiting friends. Beard was seriously injured in the wreck, but his condition is not known.
