Stevens Creek Elementary fifth-graders Eli Hergott and Lauren Smith have each won the school's individual one mile fun run for six years in a row. This year the fun run raised more than $2,400 dollars for the American Red Cross.

The kids at Stevens Creek Elementary have been chasing Eli Hergott and Lauren Smith for years. They haven’t caught them yet.

The two fifth-graders are undefeated in the school’s individual one mile run. For six consecutive years, they have been the first-place boy and girl finishers in the annual Stevens Creek Fun Run, which benefits a different organization each year. This year the run raised more that $2,400 for the American Red Cross.

Staying at the head of the pack for a mile is something they’ve gotten used to.

“I wouldn’t say it was the hardest thing to do, but it wasn’t easy,” Hergott said.

As the fastest kid in school, Hergott said he enjoys carrying the football when they play during recess and P.E.

Both students are interested in athletics and plan to be active in sports when they start middle school next year. Hergott wants to play football and basketball while Smith plans to run track.

Smith said she felt the pressure of the competition this year.

“It was hard because all the other kids are trying really hard to beat you because they know you won every year,” she said.
