Columbia County is kicking the holiday season off with events this weekend.

The county is holding its annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Saturday at Evans Towne Center Park in Evans.

The event typically draws 2,500 to 3,000 people, county Community Events Specialist Leanne Johnson said.

“We are going to have Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus,” Johnson said. “Santa will be arriving on a fire truck at 4 p.m.”

Saxophonist Fred Williams and several elementary school choruses will be performing until the Christmas tree is lit about 7 p.m.

The holiday fun will continue Sunday with the 49th annual Merchants of Columbia County Christmas Parade.

The parade begins at 2 p.m.

It will run from North Belair Road at Evans to Locks Road to Washington Road and along Belair Road to Cox Road.

Local Olympic shot putter Reese Hoffa will be the grand marshal, said parade coordinator Billy Franke.

He said he expects about 90 entries, including high school marching bands and JROTC units, dance companies, Boy Scout and Girl Scout floats as well as those from local businesses.
