A local agency is hoping its inaugural 5K walk will kickstart communitywide fundraising efforts for the organization.
When Help Can’t Wait has been serving nursing home residents in the CSRA for seven years and provides basic comfort items to those who have no local family or resources.
“In order to continue to provide fresh toiletries, changes of clothing, small televisions and MP3 players for the bedridden, regular visitors and special treats such as hand spas, parties and even proms, we need a consistent flow of income,” said Helen McVicker, founder and president of the Martinez-based When Help Can’t Wait.
While the organization has been creative in its fundraising, it desperately needs regular sponsors or groups who will donate to them or host annual fundraisers on their behalf.
To jumpstart this effort, When Help Can’t Wait will host the Jingle Bell 5K Walk on Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. The 3.1- mile walk will take place at the Ninth Street entrance to the Augusta Riverwalk. Entry fees are $20 for walkers who register before Nov. 25.
Entry fee for the walk is $25. There is no registration fee for walkers 13 and under. Preregistered walkers will receive a T-shirt; T-shirts for walk-day registrants will be on a first-come, first-available basis.
According to McVicker, prizes will be awarded to the first man and woman to complete the walk, as well as for the oldest walker.
Sponsorship for the walk is just $100. Individuals interested in either sponsoring or participating in the walk can call (706) 855-0715.
