A Martinez man is charged with murder after a Harlem man died Tuesday from injuries he suffered in a confrontation.
Donald James Blakely, 51, of Rolland Road in Harlem, died as a result of a head injury from a Monday fight with Evans Bernard Walton.
Walton, 38, of Applecross Drive, was charged with murder and aggravated battery. He’s being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond, according to jail records.
Just after 3 p.m., deputies responded to Applecross Apartments, where they found Blakely lying on the ground unconscious, according to a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
A witness identified Walton as the one who harmed Blakely.
Though Walton left before police arrived, he turned himself in to authorities from a building across the street and admitted to striking Blakely, according to the report. Walton said he called Blakely a drunk, so Blakely spit in his face.
Walton said he slapped Blakely, who then fell backward and hit the back of his head on the sidewalk, according to the report.
Blakely was taken to the Georgia Regents Medical Center, where he died from the injury late Tuesday, according to sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta.
