Young fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth will have a chance to celebrate the birthday of the author’s most famous characters at the Columbia County Library on Saturday.
Hobbit Day is an annual commemoration of the shared birthday of Tolkien’s characters Bilbo Baggins, from The Hobbit, and his kinsmen Frodo Baggins, from The Lord of the Rings.
By Tolkien lore, the day is observed on Sept. 22 and promoted by publisher Houghton Mifflin, said the library’s teen librarian and coordinator of the event, Micah Newsome.
Newsome said Tolkien fans ages 11-18 are invited to take part in festivities starting at noon. The event includes a trivia competition, a screening of the 2012 movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and “plenty of hobbit food.”
The winner of the trivia contest will take home a special collector’s edition of The Hobbit, Newsome said.
Participants must register by 5 p.m. Friday in order to take part in Saturday’s Hobbit Day activities. Call (706) 863-1946 for more information.
