Membership: From everywhere – Evans, Augusta, Grovetown, Thomson, Aiken, North Augusta; fairly young congregation with median age of 35. “We have all different walks of life,” Smith said. “Rechurched, dechurched and unchurched people come to Journey.”
Known for: “We’ve got great music and I think that’s part of it,” Smith said. “Authentic speaking, communication and a come-as- you-are attitude. People come to Journey in shorts and T-shirts and camouflaged clothes on the weekends. It’s just real people.”
Music: “The music is ultra-contemporary. It is passionate, it’s authentic and driving.”
What would you say to someone who’s thinking about giving your church a try? “Kick the tires for a few weeks. Journey is not the church for everybody and we thoroughly understand that. If it is a place where you can sit and serve, I would say that is the church for you.”
What do you believe is the biggest issue facing the faithful today? “People need to learn how to live their faith 24/7 and not just a Sunday – or Saturday and Sunday in our situation,” Smith said. “How do we live out loud? How do we live without beating people over the head with a Bible and without condemnation? How do we live out loud and emulate what Christ is trying to do through us in the world we live in?
“Honestly, even as a pastor, it’s tough. “I try to emulate through authentic leadership that I’m just like everybody else that goes to Journey. I have my own hang-ups, my own struggles, my own problems.”
