Artists and arts enthusiasts are taking over the Columbia County Amphitheater and Memorial Gardens Saturday for the annual Art in the Park.

The eighth annual arts festival, put on by Columbia County Arts Inc., will include painters, jewelers, fiber artists and weavers creating works live.

“We’ve got so much creativity in this community. Your everyday person doesn’t realize that,” said Cyndy Epps, chairwoman of the event and former president of the Artists’ Guild of Columbia County. “It’s a neat opportunity to provide a venue for all of those arts that are going to be out there and show the community exactly what we’ve got here.”

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the amphitheater behind the Evans library.

Artist demonstrations are scheduled throughout the day.

More than 50 arts, crafts and food vendors and community organizations will be set up. There also will be arts and crafts activities for children.

The popular sidewalk-chalk contest is returning for the fifth year.

“It’s a big hit,” Epps said of the contest that had more than 50 artists last year. The sidewalk-chalk contest starts at 10 a.m. and judging will begin at 4 p.m. The fee is $10 and includes sidewalk space and chalk. Winners will receive cash prizes.

Epps said she expects several Columbia County schools to participate. School teams can win $100 for their art programs.

“If we can get them a little in their pocket, that’s our way of trying to help them out,” Epps said.

Live entertainment be on the amphitheater stage all day beginning at 10 a.m. with Columbia County Ballet’s Mayfest. Entertainment ranges from musicians and singers to cloggers and dancers. Anthony Chiles will perform 4:30-5 p.m. with artists painting live on stage.
