Sellers and buyers are busy preparing for the Columbia County Rotary Club’s fourth annual Giant Community Yard Sale.
The sale will be held 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 18 at the Columbia County Merchants Association Fairgrounds, 5462 Columbia Road, with proceeds benefiting area youth organizations.
Registration for vendors is open until the day of the event, said Jim Waldron, chairman of administration for the Columbia County Rotary Club. The cost for booth space ranges from $25 to $50, based on location.
The yard sale has exploded in popularity since its early days, Waldron said.
“It’s amazing how fast it’s growing,” he said. “The first year we had 75 or 80 booths, and last year ... it was easy 140 to 150 booths.”
This year the club has been preparing enough spaces for 200 booths, Waldron said. “Each year, it just keeps getting larger and larger.”
Funds from the yard sale are used for youth organizations like the Greater Augusta Council for Literacy, Youth Challenge Academy, Boy Scouts of America and Junior Achievement, Waldron said, and for scholarships for foreign students studying in the Augusta area.
Most of the proceeds from the event come from rental fees for booths, though the fairgrounds also charges for parking and water is sold at the event, he said.
