Local artists will gather Friday to showcase art in Columbia County.
The inaugural River Island Art Show will be held 6-9 p.m. Friday, March 15, at River Island clubhouse, 1570 River Island Parkway, Evans, with art, wine and food, said Linda Lavigne, an organizer of the free show and one of 16 local artists whose paintings will be displayed.
The idea to hold the show came about when Amy Hattaway and her mother, Susan Porterfield, both artists who will be featured in the show, decided the event would be a great way to promote River Island and the local artists.
“She’s really been the stimulus behind this,” Porterfield said of Hattaway. “That’s where everything really got started.”
Hattaway, a resident of River Island, said she decided to bring an art show to the neighborhood because she wanted to increase access to art in Columbia County. While there are many art galleries in downtown Augusta, there aren’t any in Columbia County.
“I’d like to see more of it,” she said. “There are so many people who love art out this way and if it’s in their backyard, I think they’re more likely to have people come.”
Most of the artists being featured at the show belong to the Mascaro Studio and Gallery Group. They meet weekly to help each other in their craft, Lavigne said.
“We’re really excited to pair up with Amy and the folks at River Island and do that,” she said. “We all get together so well and have so much fun.”
“It makes it easy for us because we’re a group and used to working together to coordinate things,” she said.
Only oil, pastel, watercolor and acyrlic paintings will be displayed at this show, Porterfield said.
