June Ekechukwa and members of Girl Scout Troop 27021 braved the cold and rain in front of Walmart on a recent afternoon to support deployed American sailors.
While selling the famous treats, they’re also accepting donations to send cookies to the crew of a deployed Navy ship.
Since January, the troop of 13 fifth- through eight-graders has collected enough to buy 225 cases. They need 300 boxes, worth $1,050, for the entire crew that includes June’s cousin.
“(People buying cookies) usually donate a dollar or 50 cents,” June said. “The boxes of cookies are $3.50. They just let us keep the change and that adds up.”
The ship, which can’t be named because of the secretive nature of its mission, has several months left of a six-month deployment.
The girls want to make sure the sailors know they are supported by sending them a taste of home. They also are writing letters to each crew member to send along with the cookies. The Greenbrier Service Unit will pay for the shipping.
“It’s really a huge boost in morale for them,” June’s mother, Amy Ekechukwa said, adding that the crew are excited about the impending cookie shipment.
She cited security reasons, requested by the Navy, for not naming the ship to which the cookies will be sent.
Amy Ekechukwa, the troop’s “cookie mom,” said anyone wanting to help can buy cookies and donate them or make monetary donation in person or by mail. Checks can be mailed to Troop 27021, 906 Windmill Parkway, Evans, GA 30809.
